From its origins in the Canticle of Canticles of the Old Testament, it's where the lily was introduced as a symbol of purity and perfect beauty. Therefore this symbol was applied to Mary and to the name of an abbey - Our Lady of the Lily –founded in France by King St Louis IX, for Cistercian nuns in 1244.
