Madonna of the Streets, " 8.75" H

Madonna of the Streets, " 8.75" H

Derived from a famous work painted in 1897 (Madonnina or Little Mother), by Italian artist, Roberto Ferruzzi, this is another heart-rending depiction of our Blessed Mother protecting her Baby Jesus from the cold.

The subjects of the painting were encountered by the artist on a street corner on a cold day in Venice. Her maternal gentleness was irresistable to him. The painting was not meant to depict the Blessed Mother, but the title, Madonnina, led Catholic Italians to see exactly that. Soon the painting lovingly became know as Madonna of the Streets because the subject is dressed in peasant garb. And that is how she is known to this day.

The full story of how the painting came to be, and from that, this beautiful image, is fascinating. And what a special gift to give to a new or expectant mother, or anyone who loves the Blessed Mother.
