St. Anthony of Padua is a favorite for many people. Known as the saint of lost things, St. Anthony led an incredible life. Originally from Portugal, he joined the Franciscans and ended up in Italy. He was known as an inspiring preacher and St. Francis of Assisi placed him in charge of the studies for his friars in 1224.

There is a story that St. Anthony was heard speaking to someone and when the hearer peeked in to see who, St. Anthony was speaking with the child Jesus, thus the depiction of St. Anthony holding the child Jesus.
