OUR LADY OF FATIMA and THREE CHILDREN, 12" H
On May 13, 1917, Our Lady appeared to the three shepherd children (Lucia, Francisco and Jacinta) at Fatima, Portugal. They are surrounding her in this portrait. The amazing events that were to happen during the five return visits to these very young visionaries on the 13th of each month shook the world. The most famous of the events was the Miracle of the Sun. Our Lady told them secrets and asked them to pray the rosary daily. She asked for reparations for our sins and the consecration of Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
Francisco died just a year and a half after the visitations of Our Lady ceased. He was 10 years old. Jacinta died less than two and a half years later at the age of 9. They were canonized on February 20, 2017, on the anniversary of Jacinta's death.
Their cousin, Lucia, became a Carmelite nun, and held the famous "third secret of Fatima" in her heart until writing it down to be opened in 1960, which did not happen. We may never really know that secret until it happens.
Sister Lucia died in 2005 at the age of 97. Pope Benedict XVI waived the normal five-year period to begin her beatification in 2008. On the anniversary of her death, February 13, 2017, she was declared a Servant of God - the first step toward canonization.
The story is fascinating and this statue will remind you of the important work of our Blessed Mother in leading the world to her Son.
